Hearts visited Guatemala to meet with artisan communities and to experience Guatemalan culture first-hand. They observed ancient weaving traditions that have been carried forward by contemporary masters and listened to artisans who now produce Hearts designs, talking about their lives.

Weaving is a communal activity in Guatemala, often requiring the participation of the weaver’s entire extended family to help separate the packages of threads, put them on spindles, prepare the warp structure from a succession of thread colors, and finally transfer the warp to the loom by individually inserting thousands of threads through the loom’s metal comb. Similarly, the beading on some designs also becomes a communal event, in which neighbors gather at each others homes to bead, compare techniques, oversee their own quality standards, and converse.

Hearts’ partnership with Guatemalan artisans enables them to devote their extraordinary traditional skills to the creation of design-driven product lines, whose sale ensures they continue to improve their families’ qualities of life.
